Fungi fans are being invited to join an expedition through Bin forest near Huntly to explore the weird and wonderful world of wild mushrooms and toadstools. From the deadly poisonous to exquisite culinary treats, magical red and white spots to the most cunning camouflage, fungi are a key source of the textures and tastes, smells and sights of woodlands in their most spectacular season. Amethyst deceiver, parasol, chanterelle, blusher - the very names conjure up a flavour of the mysterious world thriving on our forest floors in autumn. Forest Enterprise Ranger Jackie Cumberbirch has organised a free guided expedition in Bin forest on Sunday 3rd October to introduce people to forest fungi. The walk will be suitable for beginners interested in learning to identify fungi and for those who are quite simply interested in the rich diversity of forest life. "Once you start to look at fungi you realise just how varied they are in size, colour and shape," she explained. "With expert help, walkers will be able to collect and identify their own pickings, and learn some of the tricks of trade to identify different varieties. We will find out about the unsung role of wild mushrooms and toadstools in keeping the forest healthy." |
